Hanging fixings for framed and mounted artwork

theprintspace fits hanging hardware to framed and mounted artwork before shipping. Three options cover most use cases.

D-rings and cord

The standard option for most domestic and gallery hanging. D-rings on each side connect to a cord stretched between them. Easy to hang on a single hook or two-point fixing.

Mirror plates

Flat metal plates that screw through the frame edge into the wall. Used for security in public-facing or gallery installations where the frame should sit flush.

Strap hangers

Heavy-duty metal straps fixed to the back, hung on screws. They carry more weight than D-rings, so they are the required fixing on the largest frames (roughly 40×50 inches / 1016×1270 mm and above), where D-rings and cord aren't rated for the load.

Substrate (archival mounting) fixings

Mounting on a hard substrate (Aluminium, Dibond, 12mm MDF, Acrylic Reverse) needs the print's shortest side to be at least 180 mm — smaller prints can be mounted on the lightweight substrates only. Fixings then depend on the substrate:

  • Aluminium / Dibond / Acrylic Reverse — Battens or a Subframe. These need the print's shortest side to be at least 305 mm; below that the print is mounted without a hanging fixing.
  • 12mm MDF — Keyhole, Nail Hanging, Mirror Plates, D-Rings & Cord, or Battens.
  • Lightweight substrates (Foamboard, Foamex, Display Card) ship without a hanging fixing.

Which fixings are available (by size)

The order journey only offers fixings that suit the finished size:

  • Large frames (about 1016×1270 mm and up) — Strap Hangers only.
  • Large MDF mounts (about 1016×762 mm and up) — Battens only.
  • Otherwise you get the full list for that finish, with "No fixings" at the bottom (it's never the default).

Default selection

Most dropship orders ship with D-Rings and Cord by default — the most universally useful option. For bespoke framing or archival mounting you choose the fixing at the order stage.

Availability by size

Battens & Subframe are available on prints whose shortest side is 30.5 cm (12") or larger; the mounting step shows this hint next to the options.
