How to set edition sizes (limited or open)

limited edition

Editions set how many prints can be sold per size. You configure them in the Set Editions card during drop setup, or later via Edit Options → Edition sizes.

Every approved size starts as Limited by default. Change any row to Open if you don't want a cap.

Limited vs open

Each size row has an Edition Type dropdown with two options:

  • Limited — a capped run. Enter the number of prints (1–1000) in the Edition Size column. Each print can ship with a numbered certificate.
  • Open — uncapped. The Edition Size column shows N/A (the number you'd typed is kept in case you switch back). Use this when demand is hard to judge, or you want to sell the artwork again later.

You can mix types per size in the same drop — e.g. Small open, Statement limited to 10.

New drops pre-fill a suggested cap per size:

  • Small — 100
  • Medium — 50
  • Large — 25
  • Statement — 10

Smaller editions feel more exclusive and support higher prices; larger ones maximise reach but reduce urgency. Override any value freely within 1–1000.

Linked framed and unframed editions

The Link framed and unframed editions toggle sits at the bottom of the card and is on by default.

  • Linked (on) — print and frame share one edition ladder per size. Selling unframed #5 also burns #5 for framed, so the edition of N is shared.
  • Unlinked (off) — print and frame have separate ladders. Each can issue its own #1, #2, #3 independently.

One edition shared across frame colours

A limited edition of N is shared across all the Shopify variants for that size — the Print-only variant plus one variant per pre-made frame colour you've enabled (Black, White, Oak). They all draw from the same edition of N.

Shopify has no native shared-inventory across variants, so we keep them in step automatically: when a paid order comes in, the sibling variants of the same size (print and every frame colour) are decremented by the quantity sold. Refunds restore the count. This means N is the true total across print and all frame colours combined — not N each.

Multiple artworks

When a drop has several artworks, a thumbnail strip at the top of the card lets you switch between them one at a time. Set editions on one artwork, then use Apply to all artworks to copy that artwork's edition types and sizes (by size name) to every other artwork.

After publishing

  • Open Edit Options → Edition sizes to revise.
  • Raise a cap freely to extend a successful release.
  • Don't lower a cap below the number already sold — that would orphan existing edition holders.
