About frame colour variants (Black, White, Oak)

frame colour

Frame colour is a per-artwork choice. Each colour you pick becomes a separate purchasable variant on the published product, so customers buy the exact frame they see — not just "framed".

Setting the colour

On the Framing Options card, each artwork has its own Frame: dropdown with three options:

  • Black
  • White
  • Oak

The choice is per artwork, not one per drop — artworks in the same drop don't have to share a frame colour.

How colours become variants

Each colour you offer becomes a value under the Shopify Type option on the product:

  • Print only — the unframed variant.
  • Black Frame
  • White Frame
  • Oak Frame

Only the colours you actually selected appear. If every artwork is Black, the product's Type option is just "Print only" and "Black Frame".

Variants are always ordered Print only → Black Frame → White Frame → Oak Frame, so the storefront picker reads the same way every time.

Pricing and editions

Each frame colour is its own variant, so it carries its own price and (for limited drops) its own edition count. Set prices on the Pricing step and edition sizes on the edition step as normal.

The preview frame you see in the wizard is a representative moulding for the colour. The real, priced frame is resolved per size and colour when you publish, so the price shown on the live product reflects the actual frame supplied at that size.

Fallback

If a framed variant's colour is missing or not recognised, it falls back to Black Frame rather than failing. In normal use the dropdown only ever sets a known colour, so you won't hit this — it's a safety net for legacy data.

Notes

  • Frame colours use theprintspace pre-made frames (wood and glass). For gallery-grade or unusual sizes, use bespoke framing instead.
  • Mount board is configured separately on the Finishing Touches step and applies to framed variants only.
  • To change a colour after publishing, edit the drop and return to the Framing Options card.
