How to choose framing for a drop

framingframe colour

Framing is set on the Framing Options step. You decide whether to offer framed prints alongside unframed ones, then pick a frame colour for each artwork. theprintspace recommends selling framed (boosts profit ~20%).

Where to find it

The Framing Options card comes early in the wizard: Select artworks for this drop → Artwork Title(s) → Framing Options → Borders → … → Paper choice → Signatures, numbering and mount boards. It sits before borders and paper.

To change framing after publishing, open the drop from the Drop List (sidebar) → Edit, then use the Product & variant choices tile on the Edit Options hub.

Sell framed at all?

The card opens with one question — "Would you like to offer framed prints alongside unframed?":

  • Yes, offer framed — the drop offers both unframed and framed variants for every artwork.
  • No, unframed only — the drop only sells unframed prints.

Recommended: Yes. Profit per drop typically rises ~20% because framed variants carry a higher margin and customers value the ready-to-hang convenience.

Frame colour — per artwork

If you offer framed, the card then shows the Product & variant choices grid. Each artwork has its own Frame: dropdown so you can set the colour artwork by artwork — they don't all have to match:

  • Black — most popular; works with most artwork styles and interiors.
  • White — clean, gallery-modern. Great for minimalist and high-contrast work.
  • Oak — natural wood; warm, traditional, suits earthy tones and analogue photography.

Each colour becomes a separate variant on the published product — the Shopify Type option shows "Print only" plus "Black Frame", "White Frame" and/or "Oak Frame" depending on what you picked.

Mount board

Frames no longer ship with a fixed white window mount. Mount board is configured later, on the Signatures, numbering and mount boards step (the Mount boards section), and applies to framed variants only:

  • Colour — Black, Cream, White or Ivory.
  • Sizing (when the print has a border) — Cover border (the mount covers the whole printed border) or Half and half (the mount covers the inner half, leaving the outer half visible).

You can also choose No mount boards (rather than Add mount boards) if you'd rather not include one.

Aspect-ratio matching

Pre-made frames come in fixed sizes. If your artwork's aspect ratio doesn't match a stocked frame size, the system picks the closest frame ratio for the framed variant. This shows up in the pricing card as the framed size, which may differ slightly from the unframed size.

What ships

Framed orders include:

  • The print, dry-mounted into the frame at theprintspace.
  • A wooden moulding in your chosen colour, with glass.
  • The mount board you configured on the Signatures, numbering and mount boards step (where added).
  • Hanging fixings.

When to sell unframed only

  • Your audience values DIY framing or has bespoke local framers they prefer.
  • Your artwork is unusual proportions where pre-made frames don't fit cleanly.
  • You're testing the market and want to keep production simpler.

For most drops, selling both is the right answer.
