Should you offer discounts, and how

Discounts can drive action, but use them carefully. Your aim as an artist is to build a premium, sustainable brand, and heavy or constant discounting trains buyers to wait and can erode the sense that your work is valuable. The better lever is usually scarcity and urgency through limited editions and timed drops, which create momentum without cheapening your work.

When discounts do make sense, use them with intent:

  1. Tie them to a reason. A first-purchase welcome offer, a launch incentive, or a thank-you for joining your list feels purposeful rather than desperate.
  2. Offer value instead of cutting price. Free or discounted shipping, or a small extra such as a digital wallpaper, can incentivise a purchase while protecting your headline price and your margins.
  3. Reward loyalty and referrals. A perk for subscribers who refer friends grows your list and your sales at once, and the buyer still pays for the print.
  4. Make them time-limited. A deadline turns a discount into urgency rather than an open invitation to wait.
  5. Protect your margins. Whatever you offer, make sure you still make money on every order. Never discount into a loss.

Action: rather than slashing prices, design one purposeful incentive, for example a welcome offer for new subscribers or free shipping during a launch, with a clear deadline. Keep your core pricing strong so your editions hold their value over time.
